China’s Growing Footprints in South Asia
Hosted by CCCS (Center for Contemporary China Studies) in partnership with CSEP
About the event
China is becoming an increasingly influential actor in South Asia, moving beyond trade, investments, military and other material ties. South Asia is also a lynchpin in China’s ambitious and expansive Belt and Road Initiative. With China’s goals and its activities in the region becoming more entrenched, there is a greater need to continue factual, evidence-based, and in-depth research that examines China’s growing influence in specific sectors and countries. However, there is limited understanding of China’s goals and actions, particularly in the sphere of soft power. Furthermore, there is a critical gap in detailed knowledge about Chinese actors and the modalities of their engagement.
This conference brings together experts from South Asia as well as renowned sinologists from across the world to unpack China’s growing footprints in the region. The presenters will map and deliberate on China’s modus operandi in sectors like influence operations, media and civil society, party to party relations, culture and heritage, defence ties, and mediation and subnational diplomacy. This seminar will also facilitate comparative analyses of China’s engagements in different regions including in Africa, Europe, Central and Southeast Asia. Deliberations from the conference will be useful for governments and organisations.
